If Michigan hadn’t screwed itself out of primary relevance, I’d be yanking hard on the lever today for Barack Obama.
Since way back when I lived in Chicago and Obama was just an up and comer in Illinois politics, I’ve been a supporter. Even without some of the bullet points (opposing the war from the start, being a strong defender of civil liberties, not part of the 20+ years of Bush/Clinton, holding expert opinions in high regard [imagine that], on top of being just plain brilliant), I support him. Because what excites me most about him is how he excites others.
Our emphasis shouldn’t be on what one office-holder can or will do, but what they inspire and enable us to do. 300,000,000 people will get a hell of a lot more done than any one person, and Obama is like a big shiny mirror pointing right back at all of us saying “Yes, We Can.”
Obama is helping make politics - being connected and involved and passionate - cool again.
