PTRBKR

Designer, developer and photographer in Michigan, doing what (little) I can to help it recover its former glory. I run my own design company, Elevated Works, my photography is at peterbaker.net, and my (just photos) photoblog is treemeat.com.

Good buddy Joe McEachern, bio-diesel mechanic extraordinaire, on a recent episode of Motor City Motors on the Discovery Channel, helping to convert a 4-wheeler into a fryer-grease powered Batcycle.

Would the Hantz Farm be good for Detroit? →

“The presenter talked in broad, moral terms about “creating” a legacy for Detroit. I asked him, “Wouldn’t your legacy be more positive if you helped create 2,000 ten acre farms with community ownership than a 20,000 acre plantation?” He was silent to this question.”

"I laugh when New Yorkers complain about the strip mauling of Times Square and their weird nostalgia for when it was seedy and dangerous. If you really miss seedy and dangerous, I know a house I can sell you for a dollar. Seriously. The fact that risk-averse national retail outlets who care only about the bottom line won’t invest here is part of why I love living in Detroit. Being skipped by decades of prosperity means that this city doesn’t look like everywhere else. It comes at quite a cost, but I’ll be doggone if I wouldn’t celebrate the absence of these national retailers rather than add it to the heap of things we already have to complain about here."

"I’m still bitter over the fact that Dingell, when he was Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, didn’t do more to create the kind of change that this country needed. Instead of using his then considerable strength in the House to champion causes that would have decreased global warming pollution and increased fuel efficiency, he expended his effort fighting reform on behalf of the Big 3 and their unions. (SUVs, after all, were where the profit was.) And that’s what bothers me. He could have been a truly great figure in American history. With his understanding of the auto industry, and his power, he could have led a revolution in green transportation that would have put Michigan back on the map. But, instead, he chose to fight against fuel efficiency and energy independence, and that’s what he’ll forever be known for - driving the last nail into the coffin of Detroit."

“Oil Refinery & Salt Mine, Detroit, Michigan” © Peter Baker
My 4th submission to the 50 States Project.
Alongside Detroit’s auto industry, major oil refining facilities have tried to keep pace with the area’s consumption. This 200 acre oil refinery in south Detroit has been in use since 1930. Salt mining in Detroit began in 1896, in the deposits of what was once a huge sea, and spreads over 1500 acres with over 100 miles of subterranean roads. Estimates say that there is enough salt in the Metro Detroit underground to last over 70 million years.
